Spider-Man: Homecoming’s Tom Holland plays a pious priest, while Le punisseur Jon Bernthal plays a mute badass in the upcoming film Pèlerinage. Bernthal accompanies a caravan of priests attempting to return a holy relic to Rome. Along the way they’re waylaid by various bandits, ruffians and killers.

The trailer for the film reminds me a lot of Nicolas Winding Refn’s Valhalla Rising, starring Mads Mikkelsen. There’s a similar tone of nihilism and brute violence about the appearance of Pèlerinage that makes it look quite captivating, even just from the snippets showcased in the trailer. The trailer starts with a bit of a bang and proceeds not to let up from there.

It’s quite obvious that the cavalcade of priests don’t last through the entire journey, and only a few of them seem to make it to where they’re attempting to go. Along the way Bernthal appears to be Tom Holland’s protector while they’re hunted and attacked from all sides.

It’s one of those traveling thrillers that looks like it might keep you on the edge of your seat the entire way through.

The greenband trailer avoids getting too gruesome and gory, but the way it’s edited together it definitely makes you think that it might end up being a gory masterpiece. I can’t also help but compare Tom Holland’s role here to that of Eddie Redmayne’s role in Peste noire. The similarities are just very striking.

It’s hard to tell exactly which way the movie might go but if it’s anything near as well paced and properly edited as the trailer, then it might be one heck of an entertaining ride. Also, props to the marketing team for knowing how to make the film look intense without giving away too much.

Pèlerinage is due for release on August 11th, 2017 next month in the good ‘ole U.S., of A.
